2015 Reflections

2015 for us has been a potential game changer than all the previous years! We both still recall the same time last year, when we were all busy coordinating and planning with both families for our wedding. Jan and Feb flew away before we realised and we were already on our way to India. We had a beautiful and unforgettable marriage ceremony and felt blessed to have all our relatives and friends showering their best wishes on the D-Day.
Following this we resumed back our course studies in Melbourne and completed our Masters degrees. Upon graduating we felt happy, accomplished and extremely thankful to our parents for their continual support throughtout the journey.
We have had amazing friends to enjoy with, share difficulties and party with during our achievements. They were always by our side for any support needed.
All in all there have been many ups and downs but the joy of moving closer to   our goal this year has been tremendous and we look forward to being more productive, successful and energetic in 2016!

Unconscious moves!

For the past few weeks we have been accompanying Anusha and Vishwesh for shopping baby essentials from different stores. Each time as we enter a store, we go in the baby section with a priority to finish off their shopping first. Last time it was just me and Praveen who had gone shopping and still then we landed up in the baby section when we really felt that we were too habituated to moving in the wrong section! But to our surprise we found a good deal of a baby pram suiting their specification which they plan to buy soon.

Watermelon

We picked this huge fruit this time which we knew is over sized for two people to consume! I love to have watermelons in the summers mainly as they are readily available only at this time of the year and its the best source to keep us hydrated with right amount of natural sugar. Generally we buy cut pieces which weigh 1kg or so but this time we bought a 6kg one!
While I was at the store buying one, it was more of a musical fest with many ladies constantly tapping them which produced deep sounds. Out of curiosity, I asked one lady how she would get to know which would be good one when she replied "Its all luck".. Haha, I thought to myself luck doesnt leave you anywhere!!

DIY Earring holder

Being a person who loves to put on matching earrings, I have collected quite a number of them over the years. I always used to think if I can organise them in a single compartment but seperately which would make it easier for me to spot the other pair. The solution was lying right in my house: A Ferero Rocher  empty box!
I cut the plastic tray of Ferero Rocher box to fit exactly in the drawer and sqeezed it in. The round compartment is just perfect to hold one/two ear ring pairs. Feels nice to see my jewellery more neatly arranged. My very own DIY earring holder in a compact space!

New E-mate

We purchased a new iron on the boxing day sale. This was much of an essential appliance that we had planned to buy after moving from a furnished to an unfurnished apartment. Hope our E-mate gives us good and convinient experiences in the years to come!

Crazy night!!

On 25th December every year, Victoria offers specials to its citizens to make their day more joyful and easy going. Transport within the state is free of charge which gave the railway stations a different appearance with entry gates wide open for all without swiping the myki card!
The Federation Square had a Lego Christmas tree which was made out of lego blocks. A number of hands joined in to put them together and build a huge tree. It dint have the grace like the other trees, but was creative and different than all the decorations that I saw.
As the night was getting closer we had planned for another exciting event! Myer distributes free coupons on Christmas night for the first 500 people present. We thought we could try our luck too! We visited the store however this time they had postponed the distribution to 3am on 26th morning. Praveen and Vishwesh still dint lose hope and made it to the store early morning. They picked the coupons but later got to know that it would be a lucky draw for only 20 out of the 500! After knowing this, we all felt crazy and not worth the wait!

Merry Christmas!

made these tiny pine cone Christmas trees just as a change from having a big one in the house.
Their arrangement looks cute and the fireplace mantle looks prettier than before!

Westfield Knox

To enjoy the Christmas festivity, we went to the Westfield mall late evening yesterday. It was all glittery with colorful decor in every corner of the huge mall. We saw a beautiful arrangement for kids in the central area.
They had placed a throne with little Christmas trees surrounding it and a huge one behind. Santa would visit this place for the Christmas week between 8 to 9 pm everday and take pictures with kids. Such a nice idea to make parents and kids feel precious and gifted for the season! The entire setup was highly adorable which kept us glued there for quite long!

Birthday treat

Vishwesh treated us for his birthday yesterday night at the Greek restaurant, Stalactites. It was the first time we tasted dishes from the greek cuisine. As the restaurant is named, they had an interior design of stalactites all over the roof and gave a feel as if we were eating in a cave! I liked that idea and also the nice bright lighting in the area.
We ordered veg platter, veg souvlaki and a bowl of chips. The veg platter had grilled potatoes and vegetable rolls with three variety of dips. The dips were very similar to Indian chutneys (rather chutneys are more tasty as they are topped with tadka!) but we enjoyed this taste too. The veg souvlaki was a pita roll with feta cheese.
We enjoyed the meal and it was a good choice of restaurant to be treated on the special occasion!

Santa Cake

All the stores are not only having the Christmas decorations put up in the store but also are creatively developing products and food stuffs to seek customer attention and broaden their ideas further on how they could enjoy the festival to the fullest. On our visit to Woolworths, we saw this Christmas cake with the cute Santa icing and couldnt restrain to grab one for us!

Graduation Ceremony Handout

I was scanning through the graduation ceremony handouts that were distributed on our graduation day and felt content to see our names in it.
I am sure seeing this handout would warm the cockles of our heart after 5-6 years as we would be able to map our career growth since the completion of this degree!

Brighton Beach

When the hot Saturday was about to get over, we thought a beach side drive in the evening would be enjoyable. The beach that has colorful bathing rooms and which attracts more visitors was what we shortlisted!
Brighton beach is just 5 kms from the city and was crowded unlike the others that we have been to. After a sweltering day with the temperature of 43 degrees, people dint want to waste the weekend furthermore getting roasted in their home!
It felt wonderful to have some fresh air, see paragliding professionals dive over the blue waters, get a glimpse of a beach wedding and yes see bathing rooms!

Queen Victoria Market

Queen Victoria market is listed on Melbournes' places of visit for tourists and I was keen to pay a visit since long. Finally we ticked the place from our bucket list today! We started around 7 in the morning and as we reached few stalls were already setup while others were busy arranging.
The overall look of the market reminded me of a typical Indian market where you can bargain with the seller and choose from a range of fresh fruits and vegetables and you get the best price on the quantity you buy. It was fun and a change from the everyday shopping!

Panda Pop

Today I have been popping the bubbles in Panda Pop game using infinite lives to release the baby pandas. Vacation chill time!
I was introduced to this game my Mr.Rayyan. He has his fundas clear on these games. If he cannot clear a level in the first go, he tells me "Ohh this game is too difficult... Maybe its for big people not for children like me!!". That's it, the app is closed and a new game begins!

Customised Gift

Anusha and Vishwesh gifted us a photo frame as our graduation gift. The best part was that the frame already had our graduation pics mount in it!
Me and Praveen appreciated their thought of having two individual pics to either sides and the one with the graduation hats in the air at the centre. The first cool and personalised gift that we have received since graduation!

Ill-fated evening!

Yesterday evening turned out a gloomy one. We had planned for some outside work and stepped out from the house when we realised that we had locked ourselves outside with the car and house keys inside! Cursing ourselves for how we could do this and with a lost mind, we tried to think of the best possible options to enter back but unfortunately nothing worked. With long faces, we called Vishwesh who first burst out laughing then calmed us down, received us and we three headed to their house. They were soo generous to make overnight stay arrangements for both of us in their studio. Finally today morning we collected the extra pair of keys from the realestate office and gave a sigh of relief to end the pandemonium!

GPD (Garlic Peel Day)

We had picked two bags of garlic the last time we purchased groceries as they were on special. Before the cloves dry off and go in the bin, I crushed them in a paste and refrigerated it today. Was feeling like a grandma as it took me soo long to peel them(I have always seen my grandma in my childhood do such work requiring patience!) and then later felt like a chinese chef as the strong and pungent garlic smell was floating all around me!

Red White Theme

Our new couch has given a grand look to the living room and unknowingly we have a red-white themed decor making the space more elegant.
Me and Praveen were just thinking how everything in the room matched perfectly with the color theme (including our degree certificates!!). The adornment looks magnificent in the traditional Christmas colors for the upcoming festival!

Feeling achieved

We have hung both our degree certificates in the living room to catch their sight each time we pass by! As soon as we spot them, we sense a feeling of achievement and pride. Our hearts are full and we are extremely delighted to have received this title to add one more feather in our cap!

Geelong

We took a short visit from the Eastern beach to the Western beach and Queenscliff in Geelong post the graduation ceremony. The beach was beautiful as always! We spend our evening at the spectacular waterfront view of the Eastern beach.
The semicircular arrangement is a dock basically. The enclosed region has been developed with an intention of a safe beach play area where everyone can enjoy swimming!
Winds were at their utmost speed and the chilly weather was of no good to enjoy the deck. Maybe we should plan a visit only after we check the weather forecast!

Officially graduated!!

Finally after two years of studies, restless nights spend to complete the assignments and cramming for the examinations its time for graduation! It was a very strange feeling the first day we entered the university unsure and uncertain about almost everything in life and now we have successfully completed our degrees. We have bore the fruits of relentless hardwork and effort and as the day dawned today, we were over-joyous to attend our most awaited graduation ceremony!
The ceremony was at the Waterfront campus of Deakin University in Geelong. We started at 8am, picked Anusha and Vishwesh on our way who were super excited to attend it! Upon reaching the campus, we had to register at the front desk and we were then directed to the robing rooms for draping our graduation gowns. The draping session was very well organised with professional tailors selecting the best fit gown for each of us and pinning it up to perfection. The outfit gave altogether a different look which made us feel we have already been conferred our degree!
We had sometime in hand for a quick photo shoot with friends before the ceremony began. It was great to see family and friends of all prospective graduates join them on this day to celebrate their achievement. Everyone was deeply engrossed in taking pictures to mark this event as a milestone.
We entered the auditorium at 11am and were briefed on the ceremony proceedings. By 12 noon all were seated and the ceremony began by felicitating and conferring the Doctrate of Philosophy candidates with their certificates. This was followed by the masters and bachelors degree graduates. It was truly a special moment to be on stage and receive the certificate from the Chancellor of the University! I fall short of words to express the feelings to ascribe that wonderful moment!
Post the ceremony, we were served with light refreshments. It was fun to catch up with friends and to know what they plan to do ahead.
The big day ended with lots of chit-chat and a graduation dinner treat at the Italian restaurant, Mrs. Pamras!

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Taking advantage of the city visit today morning, we picked a variety of doughnuts from the krispy kreme doughnuts main outlet located in the heart of the city.
The Santa one looked soo cute and was specially made for Christmas celebrations. All the flavours are Praveens' favourite and he never misses a chance to grab them on his way!

Meeting Cockatoos!

On our way back from the Warrandyte State Park yesterday evening, we saw a company of Cockatoos!
The Cockatoo belongs to the parrot family and are known for their friendly nature (I had heard much about this although couldnt really go close to them!). These birds are found almost all over Australia especially in the parks that have dense vegetation. Though we couldnt complete the entire trail at the Warrandyte park, a short walk along the calm flowing Yarra river was much refreshing and cooling for the hot day.

Coconut Ladoo

Dish of the day prepared by Praveen:
Just as they look tempting, they melted in the mouth. Our house was full of pleasant coconut-ghee roast aroma. Absolutely a rich, sweet dessert-snack!

Floral Wreaths

I made two floral wreaths by myself to accessorise our house and make it look colourful for christmas. It was the first time that I have made these and I am feeling a sense of achievement as I use to adore them soo much when I would see them hung up at anyone's door! They are looking soo pretty on the walls and have given a winsome bouquet decor to our sweet home.

Cleaning Day

Today we decided to take up a chore which we were planning to do since long, kitchen cleaning. Though it was not that messed up, we ensure that we clean it thoroughly and moreover wanted to rearrange all the new stock that we have purchased and piled up recently. It took us a long while we were completely done.

A letter to Mark Zuckerberg

My grandmom's brother, has written a humurous letter congratulating Mark Zuckerberg on the arrival of their bundle of joy into this world. Its extremely well written explaining the rituals of the christening ceremony in India. He has rightly expressed his astonishment on the decision of charity that Mark has declared on the eve of their newborn as against the Indian mentality of saving more for the future of the child!

Here it is:

Dear Mark Zuckerberg,

I on my own behalf and the navacousins clan extend you and Priscilla warm greetings and congratulate you both on arrival of your daughter Max. We all are awed by the way you celebrated her arrival. You announced that 99% of your stocks worth whopping sum of

$ 45 BILLIONS would be given to charity.

There is a traditionally laid down procedure that is to be followed for well-being of the child. We believe in simplicity and thus never display our true worth. We donate anonymously but certainly not to 99% of our hard earned assets. As a matter of fact when the new born arrives our assets are short by 99%.

We Indians in general and Maharashtrians in particular, have strict and perticular ways and procedures to welcome the new-born in the family. This ensures the well-being of the child, assures bright future and takes the family name to the glory.

We celebrate the arrival of new born in the family by distributing small rectangular pieces of a sweet called Burfiin case of a baby girl and small oval shaped pieces called Pedha, in case of a baby boy. In either case one gets about 50 to 60 pieces of such sweet in a box of 1 Kg.

On the 3rd or 4th day, a small family function called Satvi-Puja is performed by family priest. On that day the goddess Satvi supposedly writes the destiny of the new born on her/his forehead. The ceremony begins with worshipping “ Gopya” which is a grinding stone called Veravanta. It is draped in a “Zabala” a girl’s frock and a flower shaped cap with stings. It is further decorated with small size flower garland, gold chain and ear-rings. Couple of incense sticks and a small silver lamp in ghee is lighted in front of it. 5 sweets and 5 fruits, called “Naivedya”  are kept in a silver tray as offering to the goddess. The mother and the new born child, in her lap, worship the goddess by applying Kumkum and turmeric powder to her. The mother-in-law then gleefully honour the daughter-in-law, for extending the family generation, by offering fistful of rice, 5 fruits and few coins in her sari called “Otee”The priest is busy chanting hymns to appease the goddess. All the family members in rotation worship the idol and pray for writing a good destiny for the new born. The priest is paid his professional fees called “Dakshina”, together with ¼ Kg box of sweet and a coconut. He blesses all and leaves for his next appointment.

On the 11th or 12th day the naming ceremony called Baarsais conducted. Till this day the new born is not named hence he/she is affectionately called as Raja/Rani or simply baba/baby. Hectic parleys go on for choosing a right and meaningful name for the new born.  All the family membersgather in the well lit main hall where a flower-decorated cradlein North-South direction, is kept in the centre. The new born in the lap of mother, facing East, is seated on a wooden plank called “Paat “. Five gorgeous married women come forward and stand in pair on either side of the cradle. One takes the child in her hands and passes him/her under the cradle. And thus the new born’s first name is announced. The lady on the other side takes the child and passes over the cradle by announcing second name. Like this by rotation 5 ladies announce 5 names of the child.

The new born is then applied with black dots on the forehead and the cheeks to ward off the effects of jealousy. Everybody claps vigorously after announcing each name in their appreciation. One of the five names is then registered with the Govt Department of Birth and death. Sweets are distributed to all present and the host thanks profusely and request them to join for brunch.

After the brunch another programme of piercing of the ear takes place. The family gold-smith is called upon to carry out this mission. It is believed that by piercing the ear lobes, the child takes restrained decisions in his life. Haste makes waste and hence this precaution. In this ceremony the Mama of the child, i.e; mother’s brother is hero. He wears a white cap called “Gandhi-Topi” covering his head and dressed in traditional Indian dress.  Red kumkum dot adores his forehead. He squats on the wooden rectangular plank called “Paat” with the child in his lap. And then the ears are pierced. Unmindful of the loud crying of the child, Mama holds the fort and helps the gold-smith to complete his task. Coconut oil is then applied to it and a small gold wire in kept in the place. Mama then shoves few currency notes in the tiny hands of the child and expectantly waits. All eyes are focused on the tiny hands to see whether the child holds the notes in fist or squanders it. If he holds it then he would conserve and save the money else would be spend thrift in his life. Either way the little child is appreciated by a round of applause.

In the interest of your daughter’s well being and ensuring bright future, I humbly request you to follow this age old tradition. On second thought the name Max is often a boy’s name and hence suggests you to rename her as MINI.

Our experience tells us that upbringing of girls is often more expensive than boys. They require more fortune for their dress, make-up, shoes, jewellery and education. Most of the girls go on to complete their Masters or even Ph.D. as against boys who are content with Bachelor’s Degree and get into either some job or start on some business.

Ambani’sMittal’sVadra’s or Munjal’s have not donated their well stashed wealth on arrival of the new born. How can you afford to make such grave judgemental error?

May be you didn’t hold money in your fist when your naming ceremony took place.

Thanking you,

Truly yours,

Suresh Karjatkar

Hissing Sizzler nite

Yesterday night we went to have sizzlers for dinner. Its mine and Praveen's most loved dish and as we cant prepare it at home. We ordered schezwan sizzler and paneer tikki sizzler with a main dish of noodles in one and rice in the other. Both of them tasted delicious except for a slight disarrangement of the cabbage leaves. Instead of being arranged flat on the sizzler pan they looked like two separate veggi bowls holding sauce curry in one and noodles/rice in the other!

Purply street

A street bloomed with purple flowers on both sides. With the windy weather, it makes me feel as if someone is hosting a grand welcome for me with pretty purple flower showers!

Police Check

We both need to clear an Australian police check before we proceed to apply for our next visa subclass. Apparently it so happened that Praveen's police verification certificate arrived yesterday while mine is yet to come inspite we lodged the application on the same day. Taking this as an advantage, he dint leave the chance to trouble me saying that even the Australian police is aware that you have been troubling your husband and needs more detailed investigation whether they should award you the certificate or not!
