Manasi's Restaurant

For the coming week, I made a list of all possible options that could be cooked from the in-house availabilities.
Just for fun, I scribbled it down titling it 'The Menu of the Week' as each morning it takes me more time to think whats to be cooked than the cooking time actually needed for the dish!
So the menu was up and ready for my only customer to choose from what he wanted for the meal from his so-called favourite restaurant!

Geared up for Winter!

In preparation for winter I grabbed these two cool sweatshirts from Abby Rose.
I am waiting for some cold weather (which I generally hate) just to wear these!

Puranpoli

Finally I tried making the so-called difficult cooking receipe all by myself: Puranpoli! Well, I had prepared myself for a mess in the kitchen today as it is supposed to be a skillful homemaker's job! But I am feeling really happy that I could do it perfectly in the first attempt.
Sometimes the social beliefs of cooking traditional receipes being complicated makes you feel more tensed in trying it out than the effort it genuinely takes!

Laurels

I was going through my file of certificates when I realised that it was long long ago when I earned my first one(approximately 20 years back!)
It used to be a great honour to be felicitated by the chief guest on sports day at school. It used to be a moment of great pride and achievement! I still recall me wearing the medals around my neck till we reached home from school and their clinking which drew everyone's attention to praise me! Those were the sweet old times when nobody calls you childish for such behaviour!
I have collected over 45 certificates in the areas of studies, sports, drawing and classical dance.
I wish to design a 'Wall of Fame' in my house where I can put up mine and Praveen's trophies, medals and certificates which would boost us further to excel in what we do!

New Pals

We had Anay and Bhavik come over to our place today for dinner. They both have choosen Deakin University to pursue Masters in Public Health. They were extremely excited and were counting days when they would land in Melbourne!
Being Melbournians since two years, we shared information and gave them tips on finding the right food, part time jobs, transport, university life and overall living. It was great to get introduced and have them spend the night with us.
A sweet thank-you note from Anay on the dinner which made me feel nice:

The Karma Rules

The below karma rules are extremely true to everybody's case when carefully thought upon. I could relate atleast one incidence of my life to each of these and they made my day full of positivity!

1. The Great Law Of Karma
“As you sow, so shall you reap.”
The most important and factual law of karma, this is something you need to keep in mind while taking important decisions in your life. For instance, say today, you don’t respect your parents. But it will come back to you when your own kids don’t respect you in the future. It’s karma. It works like a boomerang. So if you want to be happy, gain respect and live in peace, you need to spread happiness, respect others and be peaceful.

2. The Law of Creation
“Life doesn’t just happen. It requires our participation.”
You want to be a millionaire. You desperately want to be. Every time you look at Mark Zuckerberg, you take a long sigh and like each and every one of his posts on Facebook. But what else do you do? Do you work hard like Mark Zuckerberg did to build an empire? Or do you just dream of a million bucks falling off from the roof and landing in your lap? Well, that can happen only in movies. In a real world, you will have to sweat it out to earn each and every penny of the fortune you will make. You will need to participate. Miracles don’t happen by sitting at home watching Game of Thrones marathons.

3. The Law of Growth
“For us to grow in spirit, it is we who must change – and not the people, places or things around us.”
Self-actualisation is the key to contentment. You cannot change people, nor can you change your surroundings. You will have to adapt yourself to the situations and change accordingly. That’s the ground rule of survival.

4. The Law of Responsibility
“We must take responsibility for what is in our life.”
You can’t just shrug responsibilities off your shoulders. If you do so, you will live a life of a coward who does nothing for himself and his society. Like habit, responsibilities also make a man. Therefore, take responsibilities of your mistakes and correct the wrong.

5. The Law of Connection
“Even if something we do seems inconsequential, it is very important that it gets done as everything in the universe is connected.”
Remember how Steve Jobs thought his calligraphy lessons were a waste, but the same lessons taught him a lot about font design 10 years later? In the same way, whatever you might be doing now is never really a waste because it will come to your aid some time later, if not now. You may be doing a sweeper’s job at a hotel now, but you will eventually learn something from it and apply it when you are promoted to the managerial role of housekeeping. Connecting the dots will take you a long way.

6. The Law of Giving and Hospitality
How people treat you is their karma and how you react is yours.

7. The Law of Change
“History repeats itself until we learn the lessons that we need to change our path.”
Learning from mistakes is an important skill, which we need to learn quickly the moment we make mistakes.  Or else, we will keep making mistakes and life would be hell. On the other hand, learning from the mistakes of other people is also a smart move. You just need to observe and avoid doing things which someone else did.

8. The Law of Patience and Reward
“Rewards of lasting value require patient and persistent toil.”
In today’s instant world, results are expected to be served like instant coffee. However, if you want long results, you will have to take the long road and wait patiently. Haste will never give you long-lasting results.

9. The Law of Significance And Inspiration
“You get back from something whatever you have put into it.”
Dont take revenge. Let karma do all the work.

Autumn Hues

As autumn is about to start in Melbourne, I decided to paint the beauty that maple trees offer to the city in this season.
It feels heaven like to drive through the streets which are orangish-red.
Just for fun was playing around with the photo editing facilities that iPhone offers to its users. The same image looks soo very different in the different tones and tints!

Stack the Rack

We had purchased this 6 box rack to make room for generic household items but now I thought why not change its contents and give it a nice transformed look!
Feels nice to see our pics and paper art straight in front of the sofa.

One year already!

21st Feb was the day last year, when me and Praveen started for India and today we recalled it almost four times! Eventhough its been a year, I still can feel the same excitement I had of meeting everyone back home and shopping endlessly for the marriage ceremony. It was a supercool time which all of us greatly enjoyed!

Shri Vishnu Temple

The Vishnu temple in Carrum Downs is much spoken about in Melbourne. After visiting it today I came to know why it is so!
Right from selecting a calm and peaceful site for its construction to the jewellery and costumes of each of the idols, everything was designed considering intricate details. As we entered the premises, we felt serene and devotional with the fragrance of the incense sticks and the light Indian music played in vicinity.
There were a variety of rose plants which were all bloomed up making the gardens look beautiful. Unfortunately as photography was restricted inside the temple, I couldnt click any pics.
It is the best place to visit to if you love being in the countryside with a Indian traditional touch!

Responsible Daddy!

We went to see Anusha and her baby today and were happy to see them all good. Even though they know it beforehand that things will be different once the baby arrives, its still a big change, responsibility and adjustment handling different duties simoultaneously. While I stayed back with Anusha, Praveen and Viswesh went shopping and came back loaded with stuff. Seeing the long receipt, we dint leave the chance to tease Viswesh that his bills would now be huge enough to empty out his pockets for every store visit!

Joyous!

Anusha and Viswesh were blessed with a baby girl today morning and we are soo very happy for them! Our joy has no bounds! As soon as Viswesh informed us of the arrival of their cutie pie,we couldnt wait to go and see her.
We reached the hospital at 5.30pm and were expecting the mother-baby to be sleeping sound but to our surprise both of them were active and awake enjoying each others company! The newborn was observing everything going around and responded really well to sounds and hand movements. Her reflexes were sharp as if she is a month old!
We were really happy to see the baby and her proud parents doing well and in good health condition and both of us are still rejoicing the feeling of being aunt and uncle in the true sense!

Mr.Robin Hood

Rayyan got this new archery kit and we both were engaged for the entire day shooting arrows haywire! When we relaxed for sometime, I narrated the story of Robin Hood to him and he loved it. It was fun to get involved in this different sport which made 'The Sport of the Day' for us!

Its Tuesday finally!!

We received a courier, a big box full of sweets and snacks from home. Since the parcel was sent, we both were eagerly waiting for Tuesday to dawn and for it to be delivered! As soon as I opened the box and sent the image to Praveen, here is what he said:

Its been one year since we enjoyed the traditional taste of our favorite foodstuffs back home and were longing to have it again. So here we go, two greedy monsters are all set to attack it again!

Valentine's Day 2016

Our Valentine's Day today was quite different from the one people plan for! It wasnt a long drive or a candle light dinner but the first sunday after one complete week of fulltime work in Australia! Initially, I felt this is nothing great or different to be mentioned, but later thought its going to be the only Valentine's day which we would remember of not being celebrated the romantic way!
We had a list of chores to be completed and were busy running all around preparing for the coming week. At each of the grocery stores, there were beautiful bouquets stacked up which looked wonderful!
At night we had a tasty ice-cream cake to end this unusual Valentine's Day in our own sweet way!

Decor Makeover

A small change in the house decor means a lot for me. I try to be innovative each time with some new theme/idea.
The warli garland was a nice, new and a cheesy concept to be put together. It was fun for me to draw those figures who keep dancing in some weird poses with their scrawny hands and legs! While drawing and painting them, it was as if they constantly reminded me to enjoy life to the fullest while dancing without a slight botheration of which step you do and how it looks to others!
I have always loved to try my hand at canvas knife paintings(though this one is done on paper but still comes under the same form of art) because it looks grand and catchy in the end.
I feel its not about being a perfectionist in what I draw and present but its about the satisfaction of doing it myself for my house which is tenfold than buying it and thats what I feel all-round progress is about!

Squeaky Clean

I cleaned the microwave using the 'water and lemon' method and the device looks pristine now.

What I did:
Took a glass bowl and squeezed a lemon in it with the cut slices also dipped in the water. Microwaved this bowl for 3.5mins and allowed the steam to rest inside for 5mins. Then cleaned the stains with a scrub/cloth.
It is pretty much scientific that the stains will loosen up and come off easily but repented of not knowing and trying this before!

Time Management

As Praveen starts around 7.30 am for office, there has been a sudden change in our lifestyles which is feeling great than before. Its not been a week still since he has started, but we have got into the mode of waking up early, exercising, cooking lunch in the morning and starting the day with fresh minds! It felt a bit difficult initially for both of us but we will be comfortable soon following it regularly.
While we were studying we used to plan for this schedule but unfortunately it was all in vain because of our late night unending submissions, random changing part-time job schedules and managing the regular house hold activities.
Nevertheless, we are back on track and will put in all the required effort to keep going the same way!

Sweet memories

This time last year we all were busy and loaded with excitment for our wedding! Though I couldnt enjoy and contribute much to my own wedding preparation, everyone back home were planning, shopping, arranging almost every single day whatever was purchased to avoid the last minute rush. In my photos I got these wedding e-invites that Soniya had drafted!
She made five of these designs and asked us to select one which we liked! We both felt the one at the centre was the best (we liked the background picture) and decided to send it to friends and family so that they know the wedding date quite in advance. It was fun to mix n match different background images with lettering styles and create the final copy of invite.

Python huh..?

My mom last week went to her friend's house for lunch where there were few other friends of hers and their kids who had come as well. There was a discussion amongst the youngsters on how to study, what are new technological trends in the market and so on. She was narrating all that to me and all of a sudden in between got stuck and said "Everyone said you should know THAT computer language." I asked her what is THAT language which she is referring to? She not being a techno-savvy person gave me this reply "It has a snake-like name!!"
For a second, I was in a loop of thoughts trying to think hard which could be this scary language!!! And then she said "Is there a language called python?" And I said giggling "Yes there is.. You are absolutely right for your description for it as 'The snake-like language'!!"
I still wonder why computer languages are given such horrifying names.

A Great Start...

It was a great start of the new job role for Praveen today. We both were anxious (the feeling on the first day you have at a new workplace) how today would be! But it was a lot exciting with new faces around, though everyone ensured making him feel comfortable.
He had a office tour by the HR, a discussion with the CIO on the store strategies and how they have been operating overall, a brief walk-through of the ongoing projects and the areas where he could make his contributions at the initial go. He also had a quick introduction with the IT teams with whom he would be working.
After coming home, he shared all the conversations and interactions that happened throughout the day. One of his colleague who knows wide range of technologies and can resolve any given IT issue is called the "Centre of Universe" at their office! Haha...that was a cool name and the best title that could be conferred to such a knowledgeable person we thought!
Praveen is very happy and is at the utmost satisfaction of landing up on the job role that he would have ever wished for!

Traditional Vs Modern Day Systems

My field of study being data/business analytics, I come across numerous published articles and papers on professional networks on how historic enterprise information when analysed in detail helps them to understand the underlying customer buying patterns and market demand which inturn transforms and boosts business of the same enterprise. Recently, there has been a sudden apprehension and appreciation of the old Indian inventions/theories (e.g.: in medicine, astrology, etc) and the western world has realized its significance after their research evidences matched the olden results!
Even with respect to analytics, which is a booming field of study today, it was since long that I was trying to relate it to the traditional retail system in India mainly with respect to those who have had generations spent in this occupation and still continue to have a hold over their businesses with the same firmness and competency. Somehow I could not get the answer to this question and was discussing on this with my dad when he rightly pointed that people who are into these businesses, have an extremely sharp memory and observation. They don't need paper based records to justify their sales and product agility. They keenly notice and track even the slightest and silliest object that is selling in their store with frequency, time and quantity. The study of current sales and how to outgrow them in future is taught to them by their ancestors merely through observation and the experience they hold having run the business over long period of time. And that is the reason my dad said everyone in this industry respects their parents and forefathers more than anyone. Because they are their tutors for data and business analytics who teach them how to keep the show running without all these modern world information systems!
I sometimes feel amazed to see the caliber of Indians and their work. You name a field of study and its there found out long ago and practiced for ages together. Any new theory/discovery comes up from Nasa, our saints have already known and documented it, only that its in Sanskrit and its pictorial evidences might not exist but the science does! Reading about all the Indian scripts, stories and observing the mode of work that each sect of people from the different parts in India follow, I dont think there is any question which would be left unanswered in any subject!

Inspirational Talk

I spoke to one of my friend today, who underwent a major eye surgery few months back. It was a terrible and upsetting event for her and equally surprising for the doctors who never expected to see this kind of a case for this age of a human being! It was since long that I wanted to ring her up to ask how she was doing. After a few minutes of casual conversation with her and her family, our topic diverted to how this all happened.
She said "It was for a week or so, that I experienced a slight headache (the kind of pain that generally takes us to the ophthalmologist to get our eye number checked) and went to check it. I thought it would be the regular check that I do each time: give the old specs, get a new pair and back home. But this was a lot different! During the eye check, the doctor covered my left eye and for a split second, I could see nothing, absolutely nothing! I tried one more round of it but nothing changed. He quickly did a retina scan, and shockingly told that the retina had torn off since the past two days and I urgently needed a surgery to fix it up. Decisions were quick, things moved fast and there was my journey from the eye check-up chair to the operation theater table."
All the required procedures and treatments were successful and her eye sight is now restored back to normal just that she needs to take lots of rest and be patient for the internal healing. She said "God has given me a second chance to enjoy, discover and live my passion and I dont want to lose it now. This accident was mainly due to the excessive strain and pressure on my eyes. I used to study for 10 hours each day with a strong determination to clear the tough CA examinations but unfortunately couldn't. After I underwent this surgery, I no more feel like taking back that path which is uncertain and whose logic I couldn't understand and crack till now! So now I have decided that I am going to take up a course in Mass Media and Communication and chase my passion for writing and excel in this field. Life is full of surprises and you never know what you could be diagnosed with and when!!!"
The reason I felt like writing this discussion on the blog is because her words really touched me and I appreciated her willingness to achieve her dreams in spite of this tragic event. It is not easy to change your career path after giving your best for four-five years. There is a feeling which grips an individual whether he would be successful in this new venture or not. I felt the chat with her very inspirational for all the upcoming struggles and achievements that I need to fight for and achieve!

A Living Affair

I read this short piece of writing and appreciate the style in which the author has scripted how the newness in the relation was maintained. I personally like to save such good writings and read them over and over again!

Title: An "Extra"-Marital Affair That Could Never End !

It was Friday before the long weekend, she was feeling tired and wanted to leave a little early. She had worked late nights the entire week and wanted to have a peaceful Friday evening.

While still pondering over leaving early or not, his name flashed on her mobile. Her heart missed a beat, he doesn’t call at this time mostly. She swiped the call button to the right and said “Hello”.

“Hi, what time are you planning to leave?”, he asked. She knew him well enough, to not expect any formal courtesies, and they actually didn’t need any. Still indecisive about her plan, she said, “the usual time”. She knew he would understand.

“Hmm….shall we meet for coffee…I will come to the coffee shop near your office?”, he said in a lost voice. The coffee shop, their favorite shop, they loved to sneak in there to get a private moment or a heart to heart chat. She smiled, it was a good opportunity, she still had an hour to leave for home, and meeting him would be good. It felt like their first date, just that it wasn’t really the first.

She said, “ok, I will leave for home from there…call me when you reach”. Their dates had reduced over the time but had not stopped. They couldn’t be stopped from meeting each other. Sometimes she wondered that she was happily married with a perfect family then what did she still want to meet him. She got lost down the memory lane. It had started 10 years back, before marriage, kids, family and all. They used to meet every-day after office in the coffee shop, it was a new joint that time and after a few dates, even the staff waited for them. She wondered, if the staff had already guessed about their attraction for each other. They were always together, whenever they could, be it weekdays or weekends. Everyone around them knew about the “affair”. They loved being together, just chatting, sipping their coffee, exploring the bookshops, watching movies, their secret dates were no longer secret.

Holding hands in auto rickshaw used to be their moment.

It felt like old times today, but with a difference…they were parted by traditions of marriage, kids, parents and society. But it was impossible for them to stay apart, they didn’t want to hurt anyone, but could not live without each other. So in spite of pressures from society, work responsibilities, and love for family, the coffee shop remained, the venue of their regular dates earlier, became a secret get-away venue.

“bzzzzzzzzzz”, her phone rang and his name flashed. She preferred keeping her phone in silent mode as it was a great disturbance according to her but this was no such call. She was waiting for it. She answered and said, “I am coming” and hung up, packed her bag hurriedly and wished “happy weekend” to a few colleagues still in office. Office looked so empty on the eve of long weekends. Everyone was off for a holiday, this was going to be her precious break.

She rushed to her car and drove off towards the coffee shop. She parked on the other side. As she walked towards the entrance, his reflection appeared in the mirror on the door. A smile appeared on her face.

He looked up and smiled. As she entered, one from the staff pulled a chair for her, she thought, “do they still remember us…very unlikely, so many people have come and gone in these years”.

So she sat, “hi…”.

“Hi, coffee? Do you want something to eat?”.

“ya ok”.

He placed the order…and the guy disappeared somewhere in behind the restricted entry door.

“So?”.

“Just thought of having coffee with you, it’s been a while”.

“Hmm…yes”.

After some initial hesitation, it started, they were back, 10 years back. They chatted, discussed, laughed and had coffee. It was the most wonderful 30 minutes of the day for them.

Her eyes took a quick look at the watch and she panicked…”I think we should leave now…”. He looked down at his watch and said in a low voice, “ok..”.

As they came out of the shop, he gazed at the neighboring book shop…another 10-15 minutes will not harm anyone…”let’s go…”, he took her hand. She couldn’t resist or pull away, yes, another 10 minutes will not harm anyone or raise any questions.

10 minutes soon turned into half an hour. She recalled their secret dates few years earlier. Their offices were quite nearby so it was easy to meet for a quick bite during the lunch hour. And then his office moved to the other part of the city and it became very difficult to meet. “Why am I pondering over the past? Let me enjoy this moment, let me make a memory of this date…to think of in future, when there will no dates”…she shivered at the mere thought, “no dates with him?”…she didn’t even want to think about it.

They bought some books…their choice was so different, none the less, they loved reading. They looked at the DVD section for a moment and then decided against buying…the time when they used to lie down on the couch and enjoy movies was long gone…may be some day again…not now.

Then they moved towards the toys section…they couldn’t forget their families even when they were on a date…it was a conscious and mutual decision that they had taken. Other shoppers looked at them...making their own guesses and forming their own theories.

Finally it was time to go….both took out their car keys, and started discussing about the route they would take…they had parked on opposite sides, well opposites always attract. Even though the date was over, they still wanted to drive together, at least on the same route, if not holding the hands.

After a futile try, they realized that it was not going to be the same route as they had parked on different sides. It was time to get into their cars…so he sighed and said, “ok then…see you at home”.

She said, “Yup…” and she turned.

Their kids, their family, their home awaited them, and so did they…they might be driving different cars, taking different routes but it didn’t matter as long as the destination was same, their home, as long as the dates continued, as long as this affair lasted, as long as they were together.

She and her husband had managed to keep their affair alive along with all the responsibilities. Some might think that its selfish on their part to think of their families and kids as a responsibility, some consider such dates as useless. But somewhere in between, marital responsibilities, love for our family and dedication for our work, we tend to forget the very first link of the chain, our partner…with whom we start our new life, dream of a family, a home, a car, vacations and with whom we start our first extra-marital affair much before these dreams come true. And she had no intentions to end this affair.

Silly Billy

Since past few days, my passive house mate is giving me silly poses and looks!
Each time I see him, he is differently positioned and makes me laugh to myself when did I keep him like this??!!!
Maybe its the lack of continuous observation which makes it a surprise for me when I look at him all of sudden!
Whatsoever, he is our sweet little obedient companion!

All set!

As 8th of Feb is nearly approaching, we both are excited and in full preparation to make Praveen's start in the corporate sector here in Australia nice and memorable. We went shopping, purchased business essentials and arranged everything in place to avoid the last minute run. While we were busy doing this, I witnessed the same excitement which we use to have one week before school started. New books, uniform, shoes, bags, stationery, etc. etc. It was the desperateness to use these new stuff more than the interest of attending classes which made us go to school!
I am glad that we experienced the same even after turning into adults as these small things bring loads of happiness in our lives!

SkyHigh Mount Dandenong

To end the day, we went on a long drive snaking through the tall nilgiris that covered the enormous stretch of land and reached Dandenong mountain's topmost point called the SkyHigh Mount Dandenong.
This sky deck was 638 meters above sea level and we could see till the horizon. Melbourne CBD which has tall skyscrapers and makes you feel diminutive otherwise, was looking like a small estate development over the vastness of the land. Such sights make us realise how tiny human achievements have been in front of the nature.
The surrounding of the deck was equally picturesque and peaceful to spend the evening.
It was he best place to experience how spectacular Melbourne looked in the daylight as well as how stunning it was at night!

Tranquil Room

Our room is my favourite place to be in the summers especially in the evenings. The view that the big wide window offers is refreshing and gives a cooling effect from the scorching heat.
At dusk, the surrounding greenery gets a radiant effect in the twilight along with the evening breeze making it more soothing.
I cant think of a more appropriate location for a bedroom than this one!
